DORIAN DUMONT plays Aphex Twin *live // ABGESAGT

The enchanting world of the classical piano meets the electronic brilliance of Aphex Twin.

The Brussels-based French pianist and jazz musician Dorian Dumont, member of the electro-jazz band ECHT!, dedicates his piano to the musical universe of Aphex Twin. Dumont has already released an album on this subject: on "APHEXions", he transcribes a large selection of Aphex Twin's music onto the grand piano, giving the songs a whole new dimension. The originals serve Dumont as a starting point for his partly composed, partly improvised musical explorations. On this basis, he creates his very own playing field around the concepts and poetics of the electronica artist. Rave classics such as Polynomial-C and Xtal are stripped to the core, while on other tracks he remains true to the minimalist aesthetic of the source material. As an accomplished jazz pianist, he improvises on the various themes and sprinkles in a touch of blues here and there.

The result is an homage that captures both the simple beauty and the unruly complexity of Aphex Twin's electronica. Above all, however, it sounds like refreshing new music that particularly distinguishes Dorian Dumont as a solo pianist. A new album has already been announced for February 2024, with which Dumont will continue the project and with which he will come to the Gretchen. There will be music for everyone who loves a jazz chill-out area after raving, for everyone who otherwise only swears by piano recitals, for minimalists, classical music euphorics, in fact for almost everyone.
