The violin concerto by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, which premiered in Vienna in 1881, is a pinnacle of the solo literature. It is characterized by its melodic beauty, emotional depth and technical demands. Moscow-born violinist Anton Roters will play the solo part in the Dortmund University Orchestra's end-of-semester concert. Dimitri Shostakovich's 5th Symphony was composed at the time of Stalinist terror. Ostensibly glorifying socialism, this ambiguous work describes the horrors and loneliness of man under dictatorship.
