Shadows, Light, and Rainbows – Dortmund’s Queer History

Dortmund is steel, coal, and black-and-yellow passion. But hidden among the old mine towers and the streets of downtown lies a story that, for a long time, was told only in whispers. On this tour, we’ll leave the well-trodden paths behind and discover Dortmund’s colorful soul—mindfully, respectfully, and authentically. This tour isn’t a party, but a tribute to courage. We’ll set out on a journey of discovery, from the oppressive silence of the past to the vibrant openness of the present.

The route takes us to the Steinwache Memorial and Commemoration Site. At this historic site, we pause to remember those who were persecuted because of their identity. 

As we stroll through the Burgtor neighborhood, it becomes clear how former “hiding places” have become places of proud gathering. Our guides are part of the community or closely connected to it; they don’t recite memorized scripts, but share genuine anecdotes from life in the Ruhr region—sometimes melancholic, sometimes with that typical Ruhr region wink.
