Since their father’s recent passing, the three sisters—Olga, Masha, and Irina—have been living on the idyllic outskirts of town, surrounded by a beautiful garden. Amid the blooming and fragrant natural surroundings, they find themselves reminiscing again and again about their happy past. What they lack in this idyll is something we take for granted today: frequent visitors, a full social calendar, and a constant flood of new inspiration. But when one constantly yearns for something unattainable, it takes its toll on one’s actual life.

Even a thousand years from now, people will still sigh, “Oh, how hard it is to live!” While we today long for less hustle and bustle and less input, for more silence and time for the beautiful things—in other words, basically for more Chekhov—the sisters long for our kind of life. Is this constant yearning for a different life perhaps just an escape from a present that, when viewed from a different perspective, feels just right? The sisters imagine a parallel world that has nothing to do with the fast pace of our everyday lives, thereby reflecting the people of our time who are struggling with being overwhelmed.
