Ebneter Kultursommer

When the EBNETER KULTURSOMMER starts its program in Freiburg's Ebnet district for a few weeks every year, Ebnet Castle opens its doors especially for visitors to the EBNETER KULTURSOMMER: the historic venues of the Gartensaal, Schlosshof, Schlosspark and Kulturscheune. Without the castle and the generosity of the owner family, the EBNETER KULTURSOMMER would not be possible.

The EBNETER KULTURSOMMER was initiated by Nikolaus von Gayling-Westphal and Atai Keller. The focus was clearly on promoting young and unknown artists from all over the world as well as promoting the Ebnet district. "Ebnet, as a historical place in transition and as a mediator between the city of Freiburg and the Dreisamtal, is thus experiencing a new cultural network, the significance and impact of which will be visible over time in connection with the development of the town," writes Atai Keller. In an appeal in the local weekly newspaper in the winter of 2004/05, the two were looking for other supporters who would be willing to put the idea of a festival into practice.

Lioba Alicke, then an employee in the castle administration and also a committed cultural worker, and Oliver Lucht, a communications designer who had only moved to Freiburg with his family a few years previously, joined them. And so Nikolaus von Gayling, Atai Keller, Lioba Alicke and Oliver Lucht founded the EBNETER KULTURSOMMER in spring 2005 - cosmopolitan, curious, non-partisan, open to discussion and debate. This was, is and remains the conceptual orientation of the EBNETER KULTURSOMMER.

Since then, this festival has "grown": in the popularity of the audience, in the number of events, in its importance for the region. The wonderful thing is that it has retained its special charm. Although the communication and event technology on site are professional, the association places great value on the fact that the artists and audience are looked after on site by association members. Unlike at many festivals, this support is not mechanically timed, but is organized by all members and is truly lived. It comes from the heart.
