The play begins with "Rita" meeting her tutor Frank for the first time. Frank is a middle-aged alcoholic academic who took the tutoring job to afford his drinking habit. The two immediately exert a profound influence on each other.

The play deals with themes such as freedom, change, the British class system, the shortcomings of institutional education, and the nature of self-development and personal relationships.
