Elaha Soroor & Kefaya

The award-winning, London-based musician, singer, composer and designer Elaha Soroor is originally from Afghanistan. As a devotional singer in a women's music group, she became acquainted with traditional music in Iran. She studied music in the Afghan capital and was a member of the national orchestra there and a singer in the Kabul band "Aryan". She studied classical singing in India and became known in her home country in 2008 through the television program "Afghan Star". Her rapidly growing popularity and outspoken views on women's rights eventually forced her to flee Afghanistan.
Together with the equally award-winning music collective Kefaya, she released 'Songs Of Our Mothers', a collection of Afghan women's folk songs passed down from mothers to daughters. This mix of traditional and contemporary sounds is a courageous protest against patriarchy and a powerful statement of resistance and emancipation.
