The Crawdads Sing is a novel by US zoologist Delia Owens, which was published in German by hanserblau in July 2019 in a translation by Ulrike Wasel and Klaus Timmermann. In the author's home country, the novel was published in 2018 under the title Where the crawdads sing by G. P. Putnam's Sons.
Although the life of the main female character, Kya, is told from her childhood to her death, the novel focuses on the period between the ages of six and twenty-five. The focus is on her poverty, her dysfunctional family of origin and the racism and arrogance in the surrounding small town. The author tells of this extraordinary landscape, the young woman's sexual awakening, her enormous desire for education and finally a murder trial in which Kya becomes involved. The novel is therefore not just a coming-of-age novel, but a story about a life beyond the North American mainstream."(Wikipedia)
