ElGrandeToto is a superstar in his native Morocco and a highly recognizable name across much of Africa. He is one of the most streamed artists throughout the Middle East as well as North America and holds several records as the most successful artist with songs in his native Arabic dialect of Darija. After his longplayer "Caméléon", released in 2021, was one of the six most successful debut albums worldwide on Spotify, the international expectations for the follow-up are correspondingly high. It has been announced by ElGrandeToto for the fall of this year, a title or the exact release date are not yet known. What is certain is that ElGrandeToto will go on a European tour with this album at the beginning of next year and will come to Germany for two shows in Berlin and Cologne. ElGrandeToto, born in 1996 as Taha Fahssi in Casablanca, Morocco, did not take long to attract widespread attention with his dry raps and incisive skills. In 2017, his fifth single, "Pablo," already became a vital hit across North Africa, garnering many millions of clicks on YouTube within weeks. With his first EP, released a year later, ElGrandeToto then showed for the first time his artistic range between U.S. hip-hop, Moroccan rap and his Arabic influences - and this also lyrically, because in his lyrics he switches back and forth between English, French and Darija, the Moroccan Arabic, as playfully as playfully - and this often within a rhyme. Since then, he underpins his creativity and productivity almost on a monthly basis. Whether with his own tracks like "Silhouette," "Gueule tapée," "Salade Coco" or "Comforter," all of which have many millions of streams on Spotify, or with his countless collaborations with other renowned rap stars of the African, Arabic and French rap scene, such as Maestro, Wegz, Nuovo, Skizo or Don Bigg. Following this approach, he also crossed the Mediterranean with "Caméléon", his eclectic and highly collaborative debut album. While highlighting the local scene with his compatriot Smallx, he gave "Caméléon" an international scope by inviting an army of rappers from the Old Continent, from Lefa to Damso and Hamza to Farid Bang. Since the album's release, he has climbed unceasingly higher in the top ten most-streamed artists from across the Arab and North African regions, until he rose all the way to the top of that ranking in 2021 - with more than 135 million streams in 178 countries. The award for "Best Hip Hop/Rap Artist" at the African Entertainment USA Awards was only logical. Two other single releases received special attention: First, "Mghayer," a tribute to his mother, who passed away in 2020, which accompanied by a very personal video again became a viral hit and is expected to break the magic barrier of more than 100 million YouTube views soon. His collaboration with Nigerian Afrobeats star Ckay on the hit "Love Nwantiti" proved to be even more successful, especially internationally, not only bringing it to more than 140 million plays on Spotify alone at present, but also securing ElGrandeToto a place in the global pop annals - as the first Moroccan artist to receive a diamond award in France. The hungry artist, who is always open in all directions, has now spent around three years working on his upcoming second album. It is safe to assume that it will further cement his status as the king of Moroccan rap. -
