In pre-Easter times: Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's grippingly dramatic 'Elijah'. "In Elijah I had imagined a true prophet through and through, as we could use him again today, strong, zealous, even evil and angry and dark, in contrast to the court rabble and the rabble of the people, and almost in contrast to the whole world, and yet carried as if by angels' wings." To this day, this oratorio is one of the most important and successful works of its genre and testifies to Mendelssohn's gifted ability to compose dramatically and scenically.
