In the organizer's words:
Elser: I have changed my views.
Question: Because you were arrested?
Elser: No, I certainly believe that my plan would have succeeded if my opinion had been correct. Since it did not succeed, I am convinced that it was not meant to succeed and that my opinion was wrong.
Read, approved and signed by myself:
Signed. Georg Elser.
This is how 203 pages of interrogation protocol end. A testimony that was never intended for the eyes of the public. Georg Elser's attempt on Hitler's life was a thorn in the side of Nazi propaganda, because there could be no individual who could have overthrown their order. Rumors of a staged attack or an inside job persisted. Elser's failure marked a personal and historical caesura. An attempted murder of a tyrant, a failed attack, a single individual standing up against a merciless state power and for his own values!
While the deed and its consequences hang over the scene like a leaden shadow, the characters take refuge in an almost surreal dynamic. Flashbacks to Elser's past create a counterweight to the oppressive reality; family members and lovers suddenly find themselves in the cell.
"Eller" combines quotes from the interrogation protocol with traditions and fictional condensations to create a play about the life and death of the carpenter from Königsbronn. Between heroic plan and bitter reality, the production searches for the truth behind the myths and uses means of exaggeration to make the fear of one's own civil courage tangible. How much responsibility should everyone take? When is murder justified? And is it permissible to honor an assassin as a hero?
