The artist Elliot Galvin has been regarded as a pioneering figure on the British jazz scene for many years. Four solo albums have earned him top positions in the annual best lists of Downbeat and Jazzwise. He is also a member of the Mercury Prize nominated band Dinosaur and has worked with Shabaka Hutchings, Emma Jean Thackray, Norma Winstone, Marius Neset and Mark Lockheart.
Named Gilles Peterson's Jazz Album of the Year 2025, The Ruin was released in February 2025 on independent London label Gearbox Records. It is Galvin's most personal album to date. Created on the piano of his childhood and inspired by the barren yet beautiful landscapes of his hometown, the music moves freely between serpentine piano lines and modular synthesizer sounds, winding around fleeting vocal passages, rhythmically dense percussion and detailed, soulful flute improvisations. The album features a stellar group of guest musicians and friends from the UK scene, including Shabaka Hutchings on flutes, renowned bassist and vocalist Ruth Goller, Polar Bear drummer and Patti Smith and Damon Albarn collaborator Sebastian Rochford and long-time partner ensemble The Ligeti String Quartet.
