The end of an era is looming, the era of direct testimony from all those who experienced and survived the National Socialist terror. What remains are literary testimonies and video interviews - as well as the question of how we want to deal with this legacy in the future. Reason enough to take a look at the history of eyewitness testimony since 1945 and explore the complex relationship between eyewitnesses and interviewers, the medium and society. How can this legacy be dealt with responsibly? How can we deal with the fact that we have to approach narratives just as critically as all other historical sources?

This volume provides insights into the current state of debates on the legacy of eyewitness testimony as well as the traveling exhibition "The End of Eyewitness Testimony", which has already inspired reflection on how to deal with this legacy in various places. Academic contributions in this volume present a cross-section of research and the practice of working with survivors' memoirs and interviews - with a view to the question of how a future without living contemporary witnesses could be shaped.
