"The City Without Jews" - a silent film lm masterpiece from 1924, based on Hugo Bettauer's 1922 novel of the same name. Today, Hans Karl Breslauer's film is considered a frighteningly prescient work, but at the time it was a critical and striking reckoning with the rampant anti-Semitism: in the fictional city of Utopia, the population increasingly blames the Jews for hardship and unemployment. The development culminates in the expulsion of all Jews, and at first it seems as if all problems have been solved. However, the destructive reality soon becomes apparent - cultural and economic life comes to a standstill and the Jews are finally brought back.
After its spectacular rediscovery in 2015, the film was restored and the renowned composer Olga Neuwirth provided it with new, exciting music in a "combination of ironic distance and sonorous rage". The City without Jews: a timeless reminder of tolerance and humanity - unfortunately very topical again!
