Entenhausen und die Zeit – seriell oder parallel?

Research into the Duck Universe —that is, the world that Carl Barks and Erika Fuchs depicted between the 1940s and 1970s within the limits of their understanding—has posed a scholarly challenge for more than five decades, one to which Donaldists have devoted themselves with remarkable perseverance.

This lecture addresses the question of the passage of time in Duckburg. When reading individual stories in isolation, time appears to move forward continuously. However, when considering the body of work as a whole, this impression largely disappears. While there are structural changes that are permanent—such as the first appearance of Gundel Gaukeley or other characters—the residents of Duckburg never recall specific earlier attempts by the Beagle Boys to get their hands on the fortune of the banker Scrooge McDuck. Such observations suggest that the individual stories should be interpreted not as chronologically sequential but rather as chronologically parallel developments in Duckburg.

Hans von Storch, born in 1949, was first “Donaldized” in the 1960s before devoting himself to Donaldism with increasing seriousness in the 1970s. Danish and Norwegian Donald magazines, which he discovered and came to appreciate at the Copenhagen specialty store Fantask, had a decisive influence on him. From 1976 to 1985, he published thejournal *Der Hamburger Donaldist*, which was subsequentlycontinued under the title *Der Donaldist*. It is noteworthy that the citation for the award of the Federal Cross of Merit in 2019 made no mention of his pioneering work in bringing Donaldism from Scandinavia.
