At regular intervals, artists redesign the café at the GfZK - Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst Leipzig. In the process, the interior design, the name and sometimes even the gastronomic offerings change. The new café will open on March 8, 2024 and was conceived by artist Ruth Buchanan as an outpost of the Artspace Aotearoa, which she runs.
Ruth Buchanan's artistic work includes exhibitions, texts, design, teaching and, since November 2022, the management of Artspace Aotearoa. Founded in 1987 by artists and cultural practitioners, the publicly funded artspace is located in the center of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Its program revolves around an annually changing question. In connection with the current question do i need territory? (Buchanan declares the GfZK Café a branch of the New Zealand art space and names it after its address: 292 Karangahape Road. Buchanan transfers spatial, color and graphic design details from Artspace Aotearoa to the GfZK Café. In doing so, she invites visitors to participate in a speculative exchange that develops over time between Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and Leipzig.
