The European Union Baroque Orchestra, in which young baroque musicians from all over Europe are trained by early music specialists and forged into a spirited performing powerhouse, has dedicated its current project entirely to French baroque music. More precisely: that of Jean-Philippe Rameau, the master of late baroque elegance. At the heart of the program is his "Pygmalion", an "Acte de Ballet" that was extremely successful in its time. It deals with a pressing issue for the 18th century and the Age of Enlightenment: is man really just a plaything of higher powers? Pygmalion, the sculptor and artist, creates a statue of such beauty and perfection that the gods have to bring it to life - both powers together at eye level, working towards a higher goal, that is the new ideal.
