How do we report on Israel-Palestine in Germany - and under what conditions? The public discourse is highly polarized and characterized by a climate of fear. In this field of tension, central journalistic principles are increasingly coming under pressure: contextualization, balance and the classification of political, historical and human rights contexts.
Long before October 7, 2023, it can be observed that reporting in Germany often remains narrow compared to the international media landscape. At the same time, correspondents are under increasing pressure to meet expectations and justify themselves.
Against this backdrop, the NETZWERK KRITISCHER JOURNALISM is organizing a full-day conference in Berlin on 17 January 2026 to critically reflect on German media coverage of the Gaza war and the situation in Israel-Palestine as a whole. The initiative is a reaction to an increasingly repressive climate in German editorial offices.
In panels, lectures and fishbowl formats, the conference will address the question of which journalistic standards are coming under pressure in current reporting, how the discourse in Germany is structured and what role the media, political framing and the German reason of state play in this. It also discusses how journalists can regain room for maneuver, network better and actively shape the public discourse. In addition to analyzing public narratives, the conference will offer insights into the work of the broadcasting councils and international reporting from Gaza, the West Bank and the surrounding region.
Panelists/guests: Judith Scheytt, Jonathan Peaceman, Alena Jabarine, Kristin Helberg, Daniel Barenboim, Hanno Hauenstein, Elsa Loy, Christoph Dinkelaker, Pauline Jäckels, Alexander Schwarz (ECCHR) and many more.
Target group: Journalists, publicists, media professionals, academics, activists, etc.
