In FAKE DIAMONDS, Hamburg choreographer and dancer René*e returns to the dance floors of her past, to gyms, community halls and ballrooms. She dances with and against herself as a former dancer in the competitive sport of Latin American ballroom dancing. On the theater stage, she remembers touching dance partners, the stern looks of the judges, step sequences and evaluation categories. She thinks back to rhinestone-studded dresses, self-tanners and exoticizing music, to trophies and defeats. René*e and her team are now choreographing the old dances anew in the sparkling glow of fake diamonds. In an intimate queer-feminist dance performance that seeks its counterpart in the audience, they question sexist and racist structures in ballroom dancing, the heteronormative ideal of the romantic couple and binary notions of winning and losing.
