Old Faust laments his missed life. To be young again, to enjoy life to the full once more! However, this is only possible through a pact with the devil, which Faust enters into without thinking twice. The journey of the rejuvenated Faust goes into a world that is characterized by abundance and vanity. Only the girl Marguerite conveys the purity that Faust is actually seeking. But hell claims its victim: Faust, under the influence of Méphistophélès, executes
Marguerite and her brother Valentin. What was meant to be a path to happiness leaves a trail of destruction in its wake.

Gounod's "Faust" (formerly also called "Marguerite") went down in history as a popular grand opera in an 1869 version. However, it was originally a work in the style of the Opéra Comique with spoken dialogues ten years earlier. This original version had its German premiere at the Cologne Opera in the 2020.21 season, and Johannes Erath's visually powerful production can once again be experienced on stage with General Music Director François-Xavier Roth on the podium.
