Feministischer Thementag: Frauen*GOLD

In the organizer's words:

It should ignite female desire, put women in a good mood and make everyday life stress-free: Frauengold.

Advertised in the 1950s as a supposed cardiovascular miracle cure, the tonic promised "youthful vigor" for "women who are in the middle of life". "Take Frauengold and you will blossom!" - What sounded harmless was one thing above all: high percentage. The main ingredient was alcohol. It was only decades later that it became clear that other ingredients could make people ill, cause cancer and damage the kidneys. Frauengold finally disappeared from the market on August 19, 1981 - a late end for a product that symbolizes medical paternalism, ignorance and patriarchal attributions.

With Frauen*GOLD, we are taking this historical material as an opportunity to make the invisibility and underrepresentation of FLINTA* in medicine visible at the Feminist Theme Day at Schauspiel Dortmund. For a long time, medical research was focused on the white male body: Symptoms were considered standard, illnesses normative - with fatal consequences for anyone who did not conform to this standard. Diseases that primarily or exclusively affect women were researched too little, diagnoses were made too late or incorrectly.

Since the 1990s, gender-sensitive medicine has been addressing precisely these inequalities. It examines the effects of biological sex (sex) and social gender (gender) on health, illness and care - and fights against structural discrimination in the healthcare system.

A central point of the day's program is the book presentation Amazon Breasts by Reyhan Şahin alias Lady Bitch Ray. Linguist, author, activist, performance artist - and breast cancer survivor. In her book, she writes openly, angrily, humorously and relentlessly about her fight against the disease, about encounters with doctors, about powerlessness, courage and resistance. An empowering contribution that gives those affected strength and questions structures.

From 11:30 a.m., we invite you to take part in workshops and exercise programs on gender-sensitive medicine - with a focus on endometriosis and the menopause.

On the theater forecourt, we will print T-shirts and jute bags, design posters and make ourselves loud, visible and in solidarity.

In the evening, we will show the performance I wanna be a Gurrrlband by Shari Asha Crosson in the studio. Between pop culture, hyper-staging and the music business, the four characters in her play try to free themselves from entrenched narratives, take their story into their own hands and find an answer to the question of what they can do to counter the patriarchy

Afterwards, we will move on together to the JunkYard and dance into the day of struggle!
