Feridun Zaimoğlu und Burcu Argat über Herkunft und Geschlecht. Lesung und Gespräch in der Ausstellung BERLIN GLOBAL

What is a Turkish man, what is a Turkish woman? What ideas do we have about them, and which ones are conveyed to us? At BERLIN GLOBAL, the authors Feridun Zaimoğlu and Burcu Argat read and talk about migration and gender codes.

With "Kanak Sprak. 24 Mißtöne vom Rande der Gesellschaft," Feridun Zaimoğlu celebrated his first literary success in 1995. Even 28 years later, the book is still topical in the discourse on immigration. In it, the German writer of Turkish origin gives space to 24 male voices, who are often portrayed as losers, victims, childishly immature, or primitive: "The Kanaks are shuffled off customs and rites like a Black Peter. Seen from the outside, they appear only as an amorphous mass of lumpenproletarians, whom one believes to recognize by outward appearances and >specific characteristics<."

In her new novel, " As Long as Time Stops," Berlin-based Turkish curator and author Burcu Argat tells the story of a Turkish woman who flees a harem-like environment to Berlin in the 1920s. This escape is described as an act of liberation - until the Nazis seize power and she is forced to return to Istanbul. Argat impressively describes the protagonist's dejection and her desire for freedom.

At BERLIN GLOBAL, Feridun Zaimoğlu and Burcu Argat will present passages from their books and discuss the themes of their works together with the moderator Idil Efe. They will also discuss how to deal with social codes that are predominantly associated with men or women who are read as migrant.

The reading will take place as part of the open space "30 kg" . In this project by Burcu Argat and Izim Turan, seven women who immigrated from Turkey share their thoughts on migration and (gender) identity in the exhibition BERLIN GLOBAL. They tell of codes and objects that were taken for granted in Turkey and are now sorely missed or perceived as liberatingly superfluous. The open space can be seen in the exhibition BERLIN GLOBAL until October 30, 2023.

Feridun Zaimoğlu ilk edebi başarısını 1995 senesinde "Kanak Sprak. 24 Mißtöne vom Rande der Gesellschaft" adlı kitabi ile kutladı. 28 yıl sonra dahi, kitap göç konusunda hala güncelliğini korumaktadır. Türk kökenli alman yazar, kitabında çoğu zaman mağlup, mağdur, çocuksu saf ya da ilkel olarak tasvir edilen 24 erkeğe yer veriyor: "`Kanaken' olarak hitap edilenler sebepsiz yere suçlanıp gelenek ve törenlerden sorumlu tutulur. Karşıdan bakıldığında, sadece dış görünüşleri ve >belirli özellikleriyle< amorf bir alt tabaka kitlesi olarak sıfatlandırılabileceklerine inanılır."</p><p>Berlin'de yaşayan turk küratör ve yazar Burcu Argat, yeni romanında "As long as time stands still" 1920'lerde haremlik gibi bir ortamdan Berlin'e kaçan bir türk kadınının hikâyesini anlatıyor. Bu kaçış bir özgürleşme eylemi olarak tanımlanıyor- ta ki Nasyonal Sosyalistler iktidarı ele geçirene ve kadının İstanbul'a dönmek zorunda kalmasına kadar. Argat, ana karakterin kederini ve özgürlük arzusunu etkileyici bir şekilde anlatılıyor.

BERLİN GLOBAL'de Feridun Zaimoğlu ve Burcu Argat kitaplarından pasajlar paylaşıp ve sunucu İdil Efe ile birlikte eserlerinin konularını tartışacaklar. Aynı zamanda göçmenlik vasfıyla algılanan kadın veya erkeklerin üzerinde ilişkilendirilen toplumsal kodların nasıl anlaşıldığı söz konusu olacaktır.

Okuma, "30 kg" isimli projenin bir parçası olarak gerçekleşecek. Burcu Argat ve İzim Turan'ın bu projesinde, Türkiye'den göç etmiş yedi kadın, BERLIN GLOBAL'deki bir sergi alanında göç ve cinsiyet kavramı hakkındaki düşüncelerini paylaşıyorlar. Türkiye'de kanıksanmış ve şimdi çok özlenen veya gereksiz olarak algılanan kodlardan ve nesnelerden bahsediyorlar. Bu proje 30 Ekim 2023 tarihine kadar BERLIN GLOBAL sergisinde yer alacak.
