His compositions brought Eastern spirituality to Western concert halls and his music is radically reduced to the essentials. Because of his modernity and his religiousness, Arvo Pärt was not considered to conform to the system and was forced out of his Estonian homeland by the Soviet rulers in 1980 - he only returned in 2008. The focus of the special concert to mark his 90th birthday is his Stabat Mater, considered by many to be one of the most ingenious works of our time. It sets the suffering of the mother of Jesus to music in a moving way - a real challenge for the singers. The music shimmers. With ethereal sounds and mantra-like chants, the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir under the direction of its founder, conductor and Pärt specialist Tõnu Kaljuste, takes us into another world.
