As in the past, the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra is once again a guest at the NOW! festival in the Essen Philharmonic Hall this season. After "Horizons", last year's motto, this time the theme is "Utopias & Concepts". Or, to be more precise, works of various genres and styles whose genesis, arrangement or structure originates from a musical utopia or a very own concept. Because: Innovative concepts are often based on utopically charged ideas that manifest themselves in the force fields and energies of new works. This is particularly true of the "Requiem" by György Ligeti, who would have turned 100 on May 28, 2023. In the Hungarian composer's work, the originally religious mass for the dead is transformed into a visually powerful work for the concert hall, for which he was inspired by the apocalyptic depictions of hell by Pieter Bruegel and Hieronymus Bosch. The new work by the Italian composer Clara Iannotta, based on pieces by Ligeti, also looks to the future. On the podium, Sylvain Cambreling, who is regarded as a master of modernism, provides the knowledgeable realization.
