Leipzig knows a thing or two about revolutions. In "Figaro's Wedding", the revolutionary and the amorous mix in a turbulent way on a truly great day - in the sense of "madness" and in the sense of "masterpiece". Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Lorenzo Da Ponte hit the bull's eye with their first collaboration. Although they had to take the revolutionary teeth out of Beaumarchais' explosive original "The Foolish Day" on the surface, the opera nevertheless brought the revolution to the stage. The meaning is still accessible to us today: the hierarchies are renegotiated. The Count, whom Figaro once removed all obstacles from his path, has his eye on Figaro's fiancée, the maid Susanna, and now wants to revive an old feudal right. But he has reckoned without Figaro and even more so without Susanna, who is even more cunning and charming than her fiancé. She also forms an alliance with her mistress, the Countess, and thus forges a bond between staff and lordship. Will the cross-class solidarity last? Can Susanna escape the count?

Director Ilaria Lanzino was celebrated by critics and audiences alike for "Mary, Queen of Scots" (Leipzig Opera 2023) and knows her way around Mozart's masterpiece, which captures love, upheaval and politics in a sparkling comedy on a stage that is as changeable as the plot.
