We aim to draw attention to structural inequalities, open up concrete opportunities for support, and promote FLINTA individuals at every stage of their filmmaking careers—from beginners and students to established directors.

Here’s what’s in store for you at our FilmschweSTERN* short filmafternoon:

Basima – The Threads of Our Lives
(Farah Nosshi, 14 min.)

“Basima – The Threads of Our Lives” is a short documentary I filmed in Cairo. It tells the story of Basima Mohammed, a carpet weaver who works at the Ramses Wissa Wassef Art Center, with whom I’ve had a close connection since childhood. The film shows how Basima and women in similar circumstances can find their own path despite difficult conditions. With her hands, she has not only woven artistic carpets but also created a life full of independence, strength, and self-confidence. Her story highlights the immense power of creative expression and how it can become a tool for empowerment and change.

Hunger
(Ines Krapat, 5 min.)

Archetypes of mother and child are confronted with the female hunger for fulfillment in a bubblegum-dystopian kitchen.

Little Pictures
(Lydia Marx, 28 min.)

In the video work *Little Pictures*, a camera drone acts as a roommate to two women who share a large house in the countryside. The drone is at once a sister, a brother, and a friend, and functions as a character, image producer, and narrator of the film. It guides the viewer through the story of Hanna, Lilli, and itself. The drone comments on what it sees and experiences. In doing so, however, it increasingly acts as an unreliable narrator, with misleading inconsistencies arising in its statements and images: Hanna reads a book upside down, Lilli plays the piano with her toes, typing on a keyboard is described as playing the piano, and a radio is mistaken for a dog that is destroyed, buried, and laid to rest.

A Fat Summer

 Three women want their summer back. Ever since childhood, they’ve associated this season with shame. As soon as temperatures rise, the struggle with their reflection begins anew every year. Comments and stares pile up. They ask themselves: What would a summer be like in which body ideals didn’t matter?

No City, No Village
(Ekaterina Reinbold, 24 min.)

Zhenya gathers with her family at a community center to celebrate her grandfather’s birthday. She wants to use the occasion to get closer to her mother, Nadja, who—as is so often the case—is completely absorbed in her work and busy with preparations for the celebration. When the director of the community center unexpectedly shows up, the family is painfully confronted with their origins. Suppressed memories resurface and turn into intimate monologues about the life they left behind in Kazakhstan and their new beginning in Germany.
