American photographer Edward Curtis made history with the first feature film to exclusively feature indigenous North Americans in front of the camera. This epic about love and war, set before contact with Europeans, features non-professional actors from the Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl) communities in British Columbia, who are known for their spectacular visual culture.
