Weekend Course: Bread Cutting Board with Crumb Tray
In this course, we’ll work together to create a high-quality bread cutting board made from fine hardwoods that will serve you well in the kitchen for many years to come. The basic frame consists of strips of heartwood ash, which we join together using a tongue-and-groove joint and stabilize with dowels made of dark walnut—which also add a beautiful design accent. Crumbs and seeds fall through the grid into a drawer below, which can be easily emptied thanks to its magnetic closure.
Course Content
We’ll start with classic hand tools and learn how to use a carpenter’s square and a straightedge precisely to mark out the joints carefully. Then you’ll saw and chisel the overlapping joints using a Japanese saw and a chisel. Using a hand-held router, we’ll mill grooves into the bottom strips that will later guide the crumb tray. After all surfaces have been sanded and the edges chamfered, we’ll glue the strips together using spacer blocks and screw clamps to form a sturdy grid. We craft precisely fitting dowels from round rods and practice safe handling of the cordless screwdriver while drilling the dowel holes. Next, we install the magnetic closure for the crumb tray. Finally, after the last round of fine sanding, your bread cutting board receives a coat of oil that protects the wood and brings out its natural color.
