This year saw the 22nd awarding of the Öffentliche Oldenburg Cultural Foundation's sponsorship prize. The prestigious prize for young artists aims to support artists from the region at the start of their careers and make their work known to the public. In 2024, the sponsorship award was announced in the painting category. The winner is Rahel Goetsch, who was born in Oldenburg and impressed the expert jury with her fascinating works.
Rahel Goetsch's application impressed the jury above all with its clarity and quality. The minimalist formal language and the confident strokes of her often large-format works have a high level of visual persuasiveness. These are rather quiet works, often with a graphic character, which at first glance appear to follow a formal structure. Enigmatic inscriptions, numbers, letters and abbreviations sometimes appear, inviting the viewer to decipher the underlying system of representation.
But representational depictions can also be found in the artist's works: plants and human bodies, often only as fragments, giving the impression that the real thing is what is not depicted at all. This is also the fascination of Rahel Goetsch's works, which appear clear and sometimes almost formalistic, but also poetic and enigmatic at the same time.
The prizewinner studied at the Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin and at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main, where she graduated in 2023. She already has an impressive artistic portfolio and has participated in several group exhibitions. Last year, Rahel Goetsch received the 26th Federal Prize for Art Students, which is awarded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
