On the eve of the Second World War, Franz Schmidt took on nothing less than setting the "Apocalypse of John" to music. With a gigantic cast and an effective late-romantic tonal language, his oratorio "The Book with Seven Seals" traces the biblical vision from the spread of the Christian faith to the Day of Judgement.
