Frédéric Chaubin – Cosmic Soviet Modernism

A selection of photographs by the French artist shows motifs of postmodern architecture that combine futuristic science fiction and concrete monumentalism. Chaubin has been collecting architectural testimonies in the successor states of the Soviet Union since 2003. He is interested in atypical, expressive and idiosyncratic building forms that go beyond the stereotypical idea of monotonously standardized Soviet architecture. Chaubin's photographs document how the last generation of Soviet architects succeeded in experimenting with alternatives to the International Style despite economic exhaustion. His photographs focus on late Soviet architecture from the 1970s and 1980s, whose unusual formal language combines patterns of late modernism with popular expressiveness. They are impressive witnesses to a bygone era, illustrating the last phase of a socialist utopia - radical and poetic at the same time.
