Human existence is inevitably linked to mistakes. There is a common saying that making mistakes is human. This universal truth emphasizes the inevitability of failure in our lives. However, this inevitability also hides a valuable lesson - the opportunity to learn from mistakes. Not only from our own mistakes, but also from the mistakes made by others. This realization opens up a way to avoid repeated missteps and to grow collectively.

However, this requires that we are willing to talk about our failures, share them and learn from them. In many cultures, however, admitting mistakes is seen as a sign of weakness, which means that an open discussion about failures rarely takes place. To overcome this barrier and promote a culture of learning from mistakes, we launched an initiative back in September aimed at encouraging founders and former company leaders to share their stories of failure.

This event highlighted a variety of mistakes that can occur in different areas of business management. They range from choosing the wrong legal form, financial difficulties with banks and guarantees to challenges in selecting the right business partners. The sensitive topic of a failed company sale, known as an exit, is also covered.

Spurred on by the success of our first event, we are now planning a so-called Fuckup Night in Düsseldorf for the second time. At this event, founders come together to talk about their personal failures in a protected environment. The aim is to create an environment in which sharing failures is not seen as a flaw, but as an opportunity for improvement and a source of valuable insights.

By listening to and sharing these experiences, we can all learn to be better prepared for the challenges and stumbling blocks of business life. This not only promotes individual growth, but also strengthens the collective understanding that mistakes are an integral part of the learning process. Ultimately, the goal is to establish a culture in which talking about and learning from mistakes is seen as a valuable tool for personal and professional progress.
