About the exhibition

In the 19th century, collecting objects relating to authors and writers, in particular autographs and prints, became part of bourgeois culture. Goethe played a special role in this and became a national poet after the founding of the German Empire in 1871. The 100th anniversary of the founding of the Leipzig Goethe Society provides an opportunity to research the Goetheana holdings of Leipzig University Library and their contexts. Leipzig's hitherto little-studied role in the autograph trade is also coming into focus.
