Curator-Led Tour: “The 19th Century in Photography: Women in Front of and Behind the Camera” with Dr. Linda Marie Kirschey

“Photography is more than just a technique. It is a medium that combines art, documentation, and perception and shapes our view of the world. That’s what makes it one of the most exciting media to me. The British pioneer Julia Margaret Cameron highlights precisely these aspects: In the 19th century, she invented the close-up and used deliberate blurring as an aesthetic device. In this way, she became a forerunner of modern art photography. Her portraits broke with Victorian norms and depicted women as symbols of inner strength,” says Dr. Linda Marie Kirschey, our curator of 19th- and 20th-century art on paper. In her presentation in the Metzlersaal, she explains the distinctive features of Cameron’s work using various photographs and places them in the context of 19th-century art.
