FÜNF JAHRE TALIBAN: Filmvorführung No Good Men + Diskussion

Five years after the Taliban seized power, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is marking the end of press freedom in Afghanistan with a special event. Together with Afghan director Shahrbanoo Sadat, RSF will screen the Berlinale opening film *NO GOOD MEN* and then hold a discussion with female journalists about the country’s dramatic developments.

What happens when a female camerawoman’s headscarf slips while she’s interviewing a Taliban member? What do women say to the camera when they’re asked for their opinions on the streets of Kabul? And do Afghanistan’s “good men” even exist anymore? The Berlinale opening filmNO GOOD MENexplores these questions—and depicts a daily life of which, just a few months later, hardly anything will remain.

The film is set immediately before the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021. Afghan director, writer, and lead actressShahrbanoo Sadat tellsthe story of a self-assured female camerawoman who is torn between her job, her family, and the political situation in the world. The film illustrates like few others what freedom of the press, self-determination, and social openness mean for women and men in a country—and just how fragile these things are. 

Following the film screening (original version with subtitles), we will discuss the state of press freedom in Afghanistan, the film itself, and the issues it raises—including the question of why people who were once aid workers are now being abandoned. The discussion will be moderated by Afghan journalist-in-exileZainab Farahmand. In addition toShahrbanoo Sadat, the panelwill featureKatja Heinemann fromReporters Without Borders (Emergency Aid Team Leader) and Afghan journalistHaideh Faghiry. Questions from the audience will be welcome afterward.
