Mermaid spirits, Ukrainian grandmothers and Peruvian rhythms unite Ganna Gryniva on her new album UTOPIA. The songs on her third album combine old melodies and rare ritual songs with her own compositions and move freely between folk, jazz and looping landscapes - poetic, powerful, radiant and without boundaries. For the singer and composer, who has lived in Berlin since 2002, they are both musical research and personal vision: "Hope is sometimes the only thing that drives us. These songs are my utopia - a space for my country and my culture." For her research, Ganna traveled to her Ukrainian homeland after the Russian invasion, researched Ukrainian folk music in libraries and archives, talked to contemporary witnesses and recorded sounds and voices in many places to create a fine atmospheric fabric for her sounds. Inspired by the strength of Ukrainian women, UTOPIA is a moving and deeply poignant journey of mystical Carpathian sounds, wildly yearning festival rituals, wise lullabies and poetic ballads, in which the power of the past finds its echo in a contemporary, radiant and magnificent voice and sound language.
