Garden Escapes

In the organizer's words:

Sunflower, Photography, Fine Art Print and part of the book "garden escapes" by Lu Mazen

Landshut, [insert date] - With the exhibition "Garden Escapes", photographer Lu B. Mazen presents a multi-layered artistic exploration of gardens as places between reality and dream. Her photo book of the same name will also be presented for the first time as part of the exhibition at the Litvai Gallery. The opening will take place on June 5, 2026 in the gallery's rooms.

In Lu B. Mazen's works, gardens are more than just real places - they appear as emotional landscapes, retreats and projection surfaces for human desires. Between nature and design, order and wild growth, pictorial worlds unfold that reposition the everyday and reveal a quiet, often ambivalent tension. Beauty meets disturbance, tranquillity meets subliminal unrest.

The photographic works combine documentary elements with artistic condensation. They show traces of life, found situations and personal archives that manifest themselves in garden pavilions and seemingly incidental details. At the same time, they open up a space for the invisible - for atmosphere, memory and inner images. In doing so, the artist interweaves external landscapes with internal spaces of experience, creating visual narratives about identity, belonging and memory.

In addition to large-format pictures, the exhibition also includes a book. It is a personal project that combines childhood memories of gardens with today's urban garden spaces. It reflects gardens as places outside the everyday order, which at the same time mirror it. They have always been carriers of utopias and images of longing - from a lost paradise to a vision of a better future. In this perspective, gardens appear as "lived daydreams": designed spaces in which desires for meaning, community and self-efficacy materialize.

At the same time, the project points to the social relevance of gardens in the present. As part of urban infrastructure, they are indispensable places for climate, health and social interaction. They cool cities, store water and promote well-being - and show how people actively shape and appropriate their environment. "Garden Escapes" therefore also sees gardens as spaces for the future: as small, often inconspicuous green islands in which a more liveable, more human city is already emerging.

Birgit Lu Mazen lives and works in Munich and the Black Forest. In her artistic practice, which includes photography, mixed media and video, she deals with questions of identity, memory and the perception of places. She studied philosophy in Germany, Canada and Great Britain and completed photographic master classes at the International Center of Photography and the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her work has been exhibited internationally and won numerous awards; it is represented in private and public collections.
