For 40 years, the Stasi secured the rule of the state party SED. In its "fight against the enemy", the Ministry for State Security continued to expand in Lichtenberg and throughout the GDR. In 1990, courageous citizens not only saved the documents of the secret police from destruction, they also turned Mielke's headquarters back into a public space. Today, the Stasi Records Archive in the Federal Archives is located here and provides information about the work of the Stasi and its documents.

"A monument to surveillance": 111 kilometers of files are stored in the Stasi Records Archive, many of which contain personal data about people - collected by the Stasi. The exhibition "Insight into the Secret" makes the significance of this archive comprehensible.

After the tour, you will have the opportunity to visit our collection of sample files. It consists of reproductions of original Stasi documents. In addition to factual files and personal documents of Stasi officers, you will also find files of those affected. They have consented to the publication of their documents and make an "insight into the secret" possible.

Secret after 5 - Discover the hidden world of surveillance in your after hours: a short guided tour across the site and trough the archive, followed by a walk through the exhibition *Access to Secrecy*. Compact, informative and offering a rare glimpse behind normally closed doors.

In 1990, courageous citizens not only secured the secret police's documents from destruction, they also made Mielke's headquarters a public space again. Today, the Stasi Records Archive in the Federal Archives is located here, providing information about the Stasi's activities and its records.
