In the organizer's words:

The “Leipziger Steinbeißer” and GeoWerkstatt Leipzig e.V. would like to take you on a geological tour through downtown Leipzig to discover and learn about the natural stones used in the city’s buildings. Whether it’s a base, facade, stairwell, window sill, fountain, street paving, curb stones, or other architectural elements—there’s a wide variety of natural stones to discover that, to the discerning observer, tell fascinating stories not only about the city’s development but also about the geological history of the stones themselves.

Where do the rocks come from? Which rock has traveled the farthest?

What do the stones used have to do with the ice ages and the volcanism of the region’s past? Where can you find marine deposits millions of years old, some containing spectacular fossils, or even rocks formed by meteorite impacts?

During which cultural and historical periods were which rocks used in construction and other applications? Are there differences in the quality and composition of the rocks?

We’ll answer these and many more questions during our exciting geological tour through downtown Leipzig. Look forward to captivating and extraordinary stories!
