Kick-off event for the "Unblock Cuba" campaign 2024

• Dr. Tays Hernández García, molecular biologist at the University of Havana and currently visiting scientist at Charité Berlin
• the singer-songwriters Tobias Thiele (Berlin) and Calum Baird (Glasgow)

For over 63 years, Cuba has been suffering under the economic war waged by the USA in violation of international law. Most recently, in November 2023, the UN General Assembly almost unanimously condemned the economic, trade and financial blockade. 187 of the 193 member states called for an immediate lifting and only two countries voted against the condemnation: Israel and the USA.

The European solidarity campaign "Unblock Cuba" aims to help raise public awareness of the blockade and its destructive and deadly impact on the lives of the Cuban people, to educate people and to activate them to campaign for an end to the economic war against Cuba.

That is why there will be a variety of powerful actions again this year. The kick-off for this year's solidarity campaign willtake place on Thursday, June 20, 2024, in the May Gallery of the daily newspaper junge Welt . The event can also be followed online via livestream (contributions in Spanish and German with translation).

In addition to information on the "Unblock Cuba" campaign, Dr. Tays Hernández García, molecular biologist at the University of Havana and currently visiting scientist at Charité Berlin, will report on the worsening situation in Cuba and the increasingly devastating effects, especially on the health system. She led a research group at the Center for Molecular Immunology that supported the development of the Cuban COVID-19 vaccines.

Before and after the event, visitors can view the photo exhibition "Viva La Habana", which opens that evening and will be on display in the Maigalerie until June 26. There will also be a concert by the two singer-songwriters Tobias Thiele and Calum Baird, whose hearts beat for Cuba, and Cuban cocktails. All proceeds will go to the "Unblock Cuba" solidarity campaign.
