This is how pomp works! The splendor and glory of the British Empire have rarely been poured into music with such lavish Baroque splendor as by George Frideric Handel. Both the four Coronation Anthems, which the composer wrote for the coronation of George II in 1727, and the Dettingen Te Deum, which celebrated England's victory over the French army in Dettingen in 1743, impressively reflected the power of the British crown as a festive musical expression of triumph.
