The showcase of our friends from Gondwana Records is already entering its third round on March 30, 2024 - it's already a bit of a tradition. This time as guests in the Grand Hall of the Elbphilharmonie: Portico Quartet Ensemble, Hanakiv & Caoilfhionn Rose.

The widescreen minimalists of Portico Quartet have created their own unique, cinematic sound over the course of six studio albums. From their breakthrough in 2007 with Knee-Deep in the North Sea to 2019's Memory Streams, they continue to defy categorization.
For their upcoming performance with an expanded line-up including a string quartet, the band will present Terrain, a genre-bending masterpiece that slowly unfolds over three movements. Inspired by ambient music and American minimalism, the piece is both a meditation on the troubled times we find ourselves in and a paean to hope, and is considered one of the most artistically free and beautiful compositions they have ever performed.
Hanakiv is a young composer and musician from Estonia (now living in London) who creates meditative, piano-based ambient music with elements of classical and electronic music. Goodbyes is the title of her debut album and draws on influences as diverse as Tim Hecker, Björk, Kara-Lis Coverdale, Arvo Pärt, Erkki-Sven Tüür and Aphex Twin, as well as her own cultural heritage.
Music plays an important role in Estonian culture, especially choral music and its traditions, but Hanakiv also draws on her love of nature - the beautiful Estonian coastline and forests - and her time in Iceland. But it was moving to London that gave her the freedom to make her own music:
"London has given me the freedom and courage to really be who I am (as a person and musician)",
Hanakiv's origins and her new home provide equal inspiration.
Caoilfhionn Rose (pronounced Keelin Rose) is a singer, songwriter and producer born in Manchester, England, with family living in Northern Ireland and Yorkshire. Coming from a diverse music scene, she combines the remnants of Manchester's musical past with the evolving present. Caoilfhionn envisions her music as a musical collage that incorporates folk, jazz, ambient, electronica and even a subtle influence of psychedelia, while creating beautiful soundscapes that embrace her personal lyrics.
Gondwana Records is an independent record label founded in Manchester in 2008 by trumpeter, composer and producer Matthew Halsall and his brother, graphic designer and artist Daniel Halsall.
Inspired by a love of deep, spiritual jazz and British club culture, Gondwana initially focused on releases by Matthew Halsall and saxophonist Nat Birchall, showcasing Manchester's best jazz talent. In 2012, Gondwana released the debut albums of acoustic-electronic trio GoGo Penguin and folk-jazz minimalists Mammal Hands. In 2018, the Portico Quartet returned to the studio and helped define a strand of progressive electronic and jazz-influenced new music that is one of the label's defining sounds alongside jazz, neo-classical and ambient music. As a result, Gondwana has become home to groundbreaking and progressive new artists such as Hania Rani, Svaneborg Kardyb, Vega Trails and Jasmine Myra.
In 2018, Gondwana Records celebrated its tenth anniversary with a series of multi-artist events, including concerts at Roundhouse London, RNCM Manchester and AB in Brussels. For 2023, label founder Matthew Halsall announced his ninth studio album An Ever Changing View and a major tour, including a headline show at the Royal Albert Hall.
On March 30, 2024, Gondwana Records will be coming to the Elbphilharmonie's Great Hall for the third time to give us an insight into the tasteful label's current catalog.
