Gone Girl

When Nick Dunne comes home on the morning of his fifth wedding anniversary, his wife Amy has disappeared. Although kidnapping initially seems the most likely explanation, the police gradually uncover evidence that points the finger at Nick himself. His very limited participation in the press conferences and search efforts organized by Amy’s parents also makes the public suspicious. America’s tabloid media suddenly seems interested in nothing but this case. Meanwhile, through Amy’s diary entries from the past seven years, we can reconstruct the history of the Dunnes’ relationship. The once-harmonious, beautiful, and wealthy couple has discovered each other’s dark sides in the final years of their marriage. 

Gillian Flynn, who is also the author of the novel on which the series is based, succeeds in creating a satirical and cynical portrayal of what lies beneath the happy facade of a marriage: When the ability to play the man or woman of one’s dreams begins to wane, and one realizes that the other person has been putting on a facade all along. David Fincher heightens the absurdity of the plot through his cool and precise directing style. Ben Affleck is wonderfully unsympathetic, and Rosamund Pike makes Amy such an unapproachable person that neither the audience nor her husband Nick can quite figure her out.
