Grand Snail Tour — Abhängen in Werne (Solebad Werne)

Grand Snail Tour — Abhängen in Werne (Solebad Werne)

In the organizer's words:

Urbane Künste Ruhr is on Grand Snail Tour! For three years, we will be traveling through the Ruhr region with a mobile exhibition and event space, conquering public spaces with artistic formats. The next stop is Werne.

Around one hundred years ago, a revolution took place in public bathing in Germany: instead of bathing separately, people of all genders bathed together. A new sense of social freedom found a new architectural form: the open-air swimming pool. Werne in the district of Unna was at the forefront of the open-air swimming pool movement in Germany. The town on the river Lippe opened its first outdoor pool in 1926. In the middle of the summer vacations, we invite you to hang out on picnic blankets and deckchairs in the saltwater pool, listen to a reading by author Meral Kureyshi, who negotiates different forms of togetherness, and ask together with cultural historian Matthias Oloew: What does the outdoor pool mean for modern urban society today?

At the Grand Snail Tour, art, artists and the public will come together in conversation. We look forward to meeting you there!

The Grand Snail Tour is a mobile action and exhibition project that will travel through the Ruhr region over the course of three years. The project is dedicated to experimental and innovative questions of social coexistence: How can we create places to come together or activate existing spaces? What role does art play in this?
The Grand Snail Tour aims to leave a variety of impressions, offer shared experiences and invite people to join in the journey.
It is expected to end in Herne in October 2027.
