Graphic Novel „DUISBURG 1933“ Umbruch, Freiheitsverlust und Widerstand – eine Comiclesung in zwei Teilen

In the organizer's words:

Graphic novel "DUISBURG 1933"

Upheaval, loss of freedom and resistance - a comic reading in two parts

On Sunday, December 7, at 12 noon, Robin Richterich and Jonas Heidebrecht will offer a reading from the graphic novel "Duisburg 1933" at the Center for Remembrance Culture.

A city in the spring of 1933: the NSDAP has been in power in Berlin for a few weeks and Hitler is Reich Chancellor. The upheaval is also felt in Duisburg, whether on the streets, in the factories or in the classrooms. After years of the unstable Weimar Republic, it is unclear how long the anti-freedom Nazi rule will last, but anti-Semitic terror is already spreading on the streets. The pressure on trade unions and democrats was also increasing. The fractures run through entire families.

Right at the beginning of the Nazi dictatorship, key civil liberties are suspended, while resistance to the fascist regime gathers pace. The graphic novel "DUISBURG 1933" examines from different perspectives how a city society descends into fascism within a few months, bringing local historical figures back to life.

Based on several Duisburg biographies, illustrator Jonas Heidebrecht and historian Robin Richterich tell stories of persecution and flight, of the loss of freedom for dissidents, but also of resistance and opposition.

In the first reading, they will focus on the subject of escaping to freedom, and in the second reading on the development of resistance circles to fight the Nazi dictatorship.

The second reading will take place on 25.01.2026. You are welcome to make a note of the date.

The graphic novel is a project of the Duisburg Center for Remembrance Culture and will be published by Mercator Verlag.

The meeting point for participation is the Kultur- und Stadthistorisches Museum am Innenhafen.
