Günter Fruhtrunk. Die Pariser Jahre (1954 - 1967)

On May 1, 2023, Günter Fruhtrunk (1923-1982) would have turned 100 years old. On the occasion of this anniversary, the Lenbachhaus is dedicating an exhibition to him. Fruhtrunk lived and worked in Paris from 1954, where he developed the initially constructive, then concrete form of his paintings. Influential veterans of the pre-war avant-garde supported the beginning of his career, and the famous Galerie Denise René represented the young painter. Fruhtrunk's first solo exhibitions took place in Paris, Milan and Marseille, and from France he opened up a German audience.
The exhibition at the Lenbachhaus focuses on this explosive phase of Fruhtrunk's life and work in the context of Franco-German art relations in the 1950s and 60s. It sheds light on his transnational networking and brings together some 40 works with which he presented himself to the public at the time.
