PART II: Will we still have money when we're old?

Do you dare to calculate your pension gap or do you prefer to close your eyes?

Let's be honest: the outlook for the future can sometimes be a little scary. Demographic change is causing our pension funds to shrink, old-age poverty is on everyone's lips and the promise of prosperity of past decades is threatening to crumble. What used to be normal no longer seems to apply.

But is that really the case? How can the younger generations meet these challenges, what needs to change and what good ideas and developments already exist?

Marlene Knobloch

born in 1994, moved from her Bavarian village to Berlin at the age of 18 to work at the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz. After stints at Humboldt University in Berlin (German literature) and Tel Aviv (philosophy), she trained as an editor at the German School of Journalism in Munich. Knobloch writes for Seite Drei and the feature section of the Süddeutsche Zeitung as well as freelance for the ZEIT and SZ-Magazin. She is a winner of the Dr. Georg Schreiber Media Prize and was selected by Medium magazine as one of the top 30 to 30 female journalists in 2021. Her latest book is called Serious Shit. Die Welt ist gefährlich- und warum wir das erst jetzt merken und is dedicated to the challenges facing the younger generations.

Prof. Dr. Volker Meier

Is a research associate at the ifo Center for Labor and Demographic Economics. His main areas of work include social policy, finance and population economics.

Moderator: Helene Reiner is a journalist, presenter and DJ. During her studies in Stuttgart, Paris and Mainz, she gained experience in documentary film, international advertising production and journalism. She has worked for ZDF, F.A.Z., Hessischer Rundfunk, Südwestrundfunk and the program "Anne Will", among others.

In 2018, she came up with the idea for the award-winning news format "News-WG" (Bayerischer Rundfunk) and has been working as host, author and "creative head" for the format ever since.
