For centuries, trade relations with Eastern Europe and labor migration helped shape Hamburg's wealth. Jews from Russia and Poland emigrated to the USA via Hamburg, or decided to stay in the city. Sinti and Roma also settled in Hamburg. The local population often reacted with anti-Semitism and antiziganism. We take up the traces of Eastern European migration to Hamburg in the past and present and look in particular at the current situation of refugees from Ukraine and exiles from Russia and Belarus.
