In "Strings" and "Alone Together", Kahrs examines the structure of a classical quartet and explores its limits. In "Strings", a string quartet is deliberately disrupted by musicians swapping instruments and places after each movement. In "Alone Together", a vocal quartet breaks down a three-minute jazz classic into a 30-minute performance through temporal stretching and spatial separation - a study of synchronicity, autonomy and collective failure, from which something new emerges.

Hamburger Bahnhof on Tour

In spring 2026, a performance program will take place as part of Annika Kahrs' exhibition, presenting an overview of the artist's performances from the past 16 years for the first time. In these works, Kahrs also questions musical structures as well as codes and parameters of music production, performance practice and listening habits. By questioning virtuosity and consciously dissolving traditional forms, she creates a new understanding of musical experience.

The performances are part of the "Hamburger Bahnhof On Tour" series of events. With this series, the museum is placing a special focus on networking with other cultural players in Berlin to mark its 30th anniversary.

From May 2026, three further evenings of performances conceived by Saâdane Afif will take place in the series to accompany the exhibition "Five Preludes".
