In the organizer's words:

In the performance "the lord loves changes, it's one of his greatest delusions" in the Heilige-Geist-Kirche, Kahrs combines organ playing with a pipe choir that deconstructs the musical material to the point of exhaustion. Based on the work "Gay Guerrilla" (1979) by US composer Julius Eastman, which in turn is based on the chorale "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott" (before 1529) by Martin Luther, a multi-layered commentary on change, resistance and the symbolic power of musical quotations unfolds. The performance, originally conceived as a video work, takes place live for the first time in a church - a place that is itself charged with sacred and political history.

Hamburger Bahnhof on Tour

In spring 2026, a performance program will take place as part of Annika Kahrs' exhibition, presenting an overview of the artist's performances from the past 16 years for the first time. In these works, Kahrs also questions musical structures as well as codes and parameters of music production, performance practice and listening habits. By questioning virtuosity and consciously dissolving traditional forms, she creates a new understanding of musical experience.

The performances are part of the "Hamburger Bahnhof On Tour" series of events. With this series, the museum is placing a special focus on networking with other cultural players in Berlin to mark its 30th anniversary.

From May 2026, three further evenings of performances conceived by Saâdane Afif will take place in the series to accompany the exhibition "Five Preludes".
